People's preoccupation with a anti aging skin care product that claims to make you
look younger, is not surprising when most of us can expect to live longer and have fuller more active
lives. Twenty-five per cent of the skin's protein is collagen. Anti-oxidants are also part of this
same group, all related to reducing the signs of aging.
Vitamin C is probably one of the better known anti-oxidants in use today but the debate about the daily quota
required is ongoing. The problem with vitamin C derived skin care treatments, is they can become oxidized when
exposed to the atmosphere, often even before they are used.
To get around this some skin care treatments are based on derivatives of vitamin C, which are more stable and
less expensive. These new anti-oxidant products are not quite as good as vitamin C although other naturally
occurring compounds, vitamin E and lipoic acid can achieve the same effect.
The body uses vitamin E as an anti-oxidant and is also used to increase the natural defense we have against
disease, including many types of cancer, it is a fat soluble vitamin in people's blood. Whereas lipoic acid is
found in every single human cell.
Other compounds called phytochemicals, have proved to be beneficial in the formulation of a anti aging skin care
product. Another benefit, like that of alpha-lipoic acid, is their ability to reduce the prevalence of certain
cancers like prostate, colon and breast cancer.
For some time now it has also been known that the vitamins B5, B6 and B12 also have anti aging skin care
properties. The use of a anti aging skin care product is a huge scientific field to research and has far greater
potential than just producing goods that reduce the visible signs of age.
While a great deal has been learned about this subject, it is only the tip of the iceberg and more long term
effective methods need to be discovered to reverse or slow down the effects of time. Hopefully, these challenges
will get resolved in due course and better and a cheaper anti aging skin care product will be produced.
Fortunately there are a number of natural anti aging regimes that can be carried out that do not rely on
science. So, drinking plenty of water, getting a good night's sleep, exercising regularly, maintaining healthy
eating habits and keeping stress at bay are essential means of delaying the aging process.
